Alte is a town and parish in the municipality of Loulé in the district of Faro (Algarve). The picturesque village is located in a changing landscape between the fertile Barrocal and the mountainous Serra do Caldeirão, known as the most typical village in the entire Algarve.
The village is surrounded by fertile fields along the stream of Ribeira de Alte, making it a very popular destination for excursions. At the top of the hill is the oldest part of the village with a wonderful view of the valley of the stream, being grouped around the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, having a remarkable entrance to the Manueline Style. The architecture of the surrounding buildings is typical of the Algarve, houses with white walls decorated with decorative and colorful tiles, traditional chimneys and streets paved with the typical Portuguese sidewalk.
The valley below Ribeira de Alte is supported by two fountains, Fonte Pequena and Fonte Grande, and the beautiful surrounding area with several restaurants, an open-air stage and a beautiful walk area adorned by the shading of old trees being too much attractive to rest or even just to take a harmonious walk. We can also find a monument in honor of Alte’s most famous son, the poet Francisco Xavier Cândido Guerreiro.
Once a year, Alte is the stage of a very popular event for all-terrain cyclists, the BTT Alte Marathon, taking on the surrounding hills the challenge of this long awaited route.
